Background
In the mid-1980s Kappa State leaders who had attended the International Leadership Seminar dreamed of the state having its own leadership training sessions. The dynamic team of Dr. Ruth Couch, Jo Nell Lowry, Wanda Roe, Dr. Gayle White, and Adell Whitfield made that dream a reality on the campus of the University of Central Arkansas, July 6-8, 1988. Wanda Roe was named chairman; Adell Whitfield, recorder, and Dr. Gayle White, treasurer. Dr. Phyllis Jane Nusz of Bakersfield, California, served as a consultant in the planning phase. The treasurer’s report indicated that a surplus of $1.11 was returned to the state treasury. This trend of producing a superior product on a shoestring budget has continued through the years, due, in part, to the generous contributions of the committee members who do not always submit requests for reimbursable expenses. This first seminar was unique in that District Directors from each of the nine districts were invited to participate. “Explore Excellence” was the theme with the objectives of promoting excellence in education, providing information on Society leadership, and enhancing the personal and professional lives of the participants.
Leadership Seminars continued being offered every two years through 2006. In 2012 the seminars were reinstated and held again in 2014 and 2016. Kappa State plans to offer leadership again in 2018.

SEMINAR RENAMED
In fall 2016 in recognition of Ella Reese’s years of devotion to training and strengthening the leadership abilities of Arkansas DKG members and in celebration of her eightieth birthday, the Kappa State Executive Board acted to rename the state’s leadership development seminar in her honor. It is now the Ella Reese Leadership Seminar.
Her response follows: “Observing through the years that thriving organizations continuously devote time and resources to development of leadership capabilities in their members, I could not be more honored by my Kappa State Delta Kappa Gamma sisters than to have my name attached to our Leadership Development activities. You surely know how to please an octogenarian! Thank you very much. Working with the Kappa State Leadership Seminar committee was a personal blessing and has greatly benefited our organization. It is my prayer that leadership training will continue to be a high priority. I am convinced that it is the key to our organization’s longevity.” Ella Reese, Theta Chapter, 1997-1999 Kappa State President, International Leadership/Management Seminar Class of 1997
